There are plenty of good Corbon, Hornady, and Federal loads with quality expanding bullets that do not rely nearly as much on velocity to provide good terminal ballistics.Īll depends on the ammo. It applies to FMJ-BT ammo like M193 and M855.neither of which should be in your mag if you plan on using your rifle for self defense. So if I forget about shooting subsonic and just use normal ammo would you build a suppressed 11.5" SBR, or a 14.5"-16" midlength? I realize that building both uppers would be idea, but Im trying to build one gun that will work the best for this type of scenario.ĭon't worry about fragmentation range. I want to be effective out to 300m but maintain a decently lightweight and wieldy weapon that I can use in close quarters as well with an overall barrel length of ~17". Im building a close to medium range weapon with a 1-4x24. Am I overthinking all of this?ģ) Subsonic ammo - If Im going to shoot subsonic ammo, am I basically negating most of the lethality out of the round just for the sake of being quiet? Would I be better off just shooting normal velocity ammo with a can and forget about being subsonic?Ĥ) Given the choice what would you do? - I know it's impossible but Im trying to build a do-all gun, for my needs atleast.

Fragmentation is completely based off velocity yeah?Ģ) Effective range - Is there really that much to it? If I shoot someone with m855 at 300m with a 11.5" barrel is there really going to be much of a difference vs shooting that same round and distance out of a 16" barrel. So I have a couple question I was hoping somebody could school me on.ġ) Bullet velocity - If Im going to use subsonic (~1100fps) rounds vs ~3000fps normal ammo will I lose most fragmentation effective range at 100m+? It would seem to me that a bullet traveling that slow would not fragment well, even compared to a high velocity bullet shot out of a shorter barrel. And Im starting to think that may be a foolish build.

So I had planned on building a 14.5" or 16" midlength scoped suppressor host, to be used in conjunction with subsonic ammo. I also (perhaps foolishly) bought into the idea that I need a 14.5" or greater barrel for good fragmentation at 100m+. And I've always been of the school of though that suppressors go along nicely with subsonic ammo.
